Winter, the cabbage season

During the winter season, our immune system is particularly busy. Red cabbage offers valuable support in this regard, as it contains beta-carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C, folic acid (vitamin B9) as well as important minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. In addition, red cabbage provides fibre and secondary plant substances, including anthocyanins. These not only give it its characteristic colour, but also have an antioxidant effect and protect the body against harmful free radicals.

However, some people suffer from bloating after eating cabbage and therefore give up this healthy vegetable. The reason for this is the carbohydrate, raffinose, which arrives undigested in the large intestine where it is fermented by bacteria. The result is gas, which can lead to unpleasant bloating, but it also contributes to the health of the gut flora. A simple trick to prevent flatulence is to use spices such as cumin, ginger or fennel when preparing meals.
